I struggled to get a decent shot for The Old Man and the Sea. Times have changed since Ernest Hemingway wrote about the struggle between man and nature, humans are now so efficient at benefiting from their natural elements that you don’t have to worry about fishing, gutting, and cooking, let alone the battle between man and beast. I’ve always wanted to go fishing, but thanks to the fishing industry and their irresponsible methods to supply the demand there will probably be nothing left by the time I get around to it. Hong Kong is also one of [...]

I’m getting pretty annoyed by how much gigs cost in Hong Kong. I’m seeing Bon Iver in October (22nd! BOOYAH), and that cost me 20 pounds. To see Elbow tomorrow in Hong Kong at Kitec (WORST VENUE EVER) will cost around 40 pounds. Tickets to see 30 Seconds to Mars next week will cost between 38 and 54 pounds depending on whether you want seated or free standing. Red Hot Chili Peppers in early August will cost between 30 and 70 pounds also depending on where you’re wanting to be seated. Friendly Fires in mid August is also costing [...]

After staying along the Seine for over a month, I noticed that all of the boats had one thing in common: gardens. Each canal boat had a garden ranging from the miniature jungle on the tiny Dutch fishing boat to the two lone shrubs on that guy’s boat. In an attempt to bring every little part of Paris back home with me, I’ve started my own miniature garden on my previously inhabitable terrace. I think between both Kim and I, we have adopted enough hobbies to generate one middle-aged woman.

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. Anne’s excuse is that she’s having fun in Greece. Meanwhile I was distracted by the loss of my wallet and then the fact that this year is now coming to an end. This basically means that too much food has been eaten in the past week.
Last Years Dragon Boat Festival at Stanley Beach, Hong Kong
Monday was Dragon Boat festival (端午节 duānwǔ jié) and the plan was to head to Houhai to watch the Dragon Boat races. This ended up being very different from the typical experience in HK as [...]

Just a heads up in case you’ll be in HK, MGMT are performing at Star Hall at KITEC (formally HITEC) in Kowloon Bay on the 30th March. I have the sinking suspicion they’ll be sold out because everyone hopes they play “kids”.
What’s absolutely amazing is that the support is going to be French Horn Rebellion.

And it’s really rare that HK get two great acts. You can get your tickets at www.hkticketing.com or any of the HK Ticketing Outlets.
ALSO actually the Whitest Boy Alive is performing [...]

Okay, thankfully Saturdays are full business days in Shanghai. In the morning I decided I would try again at the bank, this time armed with a police report stating that my Home Return Permit was lost, along with my passport. The annoying thing is I know the teller knows and recognises me. But because of his supervisor saying it wasn’t acceptable (she looked like a right bitch), I am unable to cancel my ATM card. I am also unable to withdraw money. And since all my cards were stolen along with the rest of my wallet, I have no money.

I’m expecting this to be an endless saga, hence the “Day One” in the title. Fingers crossed it doesn’t end up being that stressful but I really doubt it. This is China after all!! Also hopefully this will help any Hong Kong citizens in China who lose their travel documents – I’ve done a bit of research and it already seems like it’ll be a pain.
Okay, so on the bus to class today my wallet got stolen from my bag. I had it when I got on the bus. The bus was pretty crowded. I then walked from the bus stop to class (about 5 minutes), and there were very few people around. During the break in the middle of class I realised my wallet was missing. So I headed home to cancel my credit and bank cards, and to figure out how I was to go about replacing my Hong Kong Identity Card and my Home Return Permit.

I just think it’s really sad. I feel like I’ve left this life that I built myself. That sounds so dramatic, but the life I lead in the UK is so different from the life I lead back in Hong Kong. Also I’ve gone from living in a lovely flat to living in a flat with my mum and having no bedroom to call my own. So I’ll be living out of a suitcase and on the sofa for the next few months.
But not much can be done.
Anyways, I’m back in [...]
